MEMPHIS, TN- July 24, 2009 The West Clinic is pleased to welcome Michael G. Martin, MD, and David C. Portnoy, MD, to its team of Medical Oncologists. As the Mid-South’s leader in cancer care for over 30 years, the addition of Drs. Martin and Portnoy underscores the clinic’s ongoing commitment to provide exceptional cancer care for patients in the Mid-South and North Mississippi areas.

Michael G. Martin, MD
A native Memphian, Dr. Martin received his medical degree with highest honors from the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine. He went on to complete his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and Medical Oncology Fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO.

Board Certified in Internal Medicine and board eligible in Medical Oncology, Dr. Martin has co-authored numerous articles on acute and chronic leukemia, lymphoma, lung, and esophageal cancer in peer-reviewed journals. He has also authored book chapters on melanoma, leukemia, the myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative disorders, and the correct uses and complications of chemotherapy. Dr. Martin has presented at national meetings on palliative care and a myelodysplastic syndrome, served on the Genzyme Leukemia Advisory Board, and is an active member of the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology. His clinical and research interests are broad, with a focus on leukemia and lymphoma. “I am very excited to join The West Clinic,” states Dr. Martin, “and am looking forward to contributing to and expanding the patient-centered, cutting-edge cancer care it provides the Mid-South.”

Dr. Martin will be seeing patients at our Midtown and Somerville offices.

David C. Portnoy, MD
Originally from Long Island, NY, Dr. Portnoy earned his Medical Degree cum laude from the State University of New York (SUNY) in Syracuse, NY, where he was appointed to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. Dr. Portnoy completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA and performed his Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Portnoy’s clinical and research interests include genitourinary cancers, gastrointestinal tumors, and coagulation disorders. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Massachusetts Medical Society, and the American College of Physicians. He also serves on the board of directors with the Susan M. Costa Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

Dr. Portnoy views his role in the treatment of cancer as that of an advocate for his patients. He considers the trust that a patient places in his/her oncologist as a privilege that carries a responsibility of fighting for the best outcomes while never neglecting their physical, spiritual, and emotional needs.

Dr. Portnoy will be seeing patients at our Humphreys and Corinth locations.
